The Cause of Lightning Floods Around Alor Setar City
ALOR SETAR – The flash flood that hit several areas around the city on Friday, is due to the heavy rainfall in a short period of time, resulting in some areas in the municipalities unable to accommodate the amount of water to flow out.
In a statement issued by the General Manager’s Office of the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada), informed that the situation is likely to worsen as a result of local drainage conditions that are not functioning optimally.
“Based on records and data, the Mada rejected the assumption of the flash floods in Alor Setar due to the closure of Tandop Ampang Jajar, Kedah River. Mada also sympathizes with the flood victims and hopes that this disaster will be avoided in the future, “he said.
According to him, observation data from stations near Kota Setar found that the number of rainy days on Friday was high.
“The data show that rain derivatives are high in practice, ranging from 54 millimeters (mm) to 132 mm, between 9.00 am and 11.00 pm. The number of rainy areas in Muda area is 190 mm for April while 160 mm (March), “he said.
“This shows that the derivation of rain during the flash floods is remarkable.
“On Friday evening, the water level at Ampang Jajar, Kedah River was lowered to 3.2 feet after the 2017 (4.2 ft) River Sports Tournament used to accommodate the expected derivatives in the evening, with a lock gate for the flow water out into the sea, “he said.
According to him, the water level at Tandop Ampang Jajar, is recorded every hour and is controlled 24 hours a day daily by the operator of tandap Mada, to enable immediate action to be taken in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
